How to Use Google’s SMTP Server

Google’s SMTP server is a free service which is used to send mails from any network for any email address. With Google’s portable SMTP server, you can configure settings of any program you wish to send emails from. However, you would require a Gmail account or a paid Google Apps account.

Benefits of Google SMTP Server

Since the emails send through SMTP server can be indexed, all the sent emails will be searchable and will be backed up on any of Google’s servers. If you wish to organize all your emails in just one place, then you can use Gmail or Google Apps account for receiving incoming emails too. SMTP server uses a different port other than Port no:25 and hence there are lesser chances for ISP blocking your email or flagging it as spam.

Set Up for SMTP Server

In order to start using SMTP server, all you have to do is to configure the mail client to use Gmail or Google Apps account for outgoing mail server. Following are the details that come handy:

  • SMTP server (outgoing emails) –
  • SMTP username – your Gmail id or Google Apps email address ([email protected] or [email protected])
  • SMTP password – your Gmail password or Google Apps account password
  • SMTP PORT – 465 or 587
  • SMTP TLS/SSL – Yes. Secure connection is required. Either TLS or SSL depending on mail client.
  • If you wish to save a copy of outgoing emails in your Sent folder, then you follow these steps:

1)      Log into Gmail or Google Apps email settings

2)      Click on Forwarding/IMAP tab and search for IMAP Access section. Then enable IMAP.

Tips on Using SMTP Server

The ‘From’ address of all the emails sent via SMTP server will be rewritten as default Send mail email address in your Gmail or Google Apps email account. Google automatically rewrites it and it can cause some minor issues from recipient’s perspective.

That can be fixed by updating an account other than Gmail or Google Apps account as your ‘Default’ one. To change it, log into your email settings and go to ‘Accounts’ tab. Choose another account to be your ‘Default’. Now, SMTP server will take this default send mail address to rewrite to the ‘from’ address.

Another important tip for using SMTP server is that, there is a maximum limit for the number of mails that can be send via SMTP. Google’s portable SMTP server allows 99 emails to be sent each day. After each 24 hours, this restriction gets restored itself.
